The suspect in the killing of the deputy in western Wisconsin had a history of violence, was a registered sex offender, and had been convicted of rape.
Prison officials in Minnesota revealed Wednesday that Jeremiah Johnson, 34, was on parole when he allegedly killed St. Croix County Deputy Kaitie Leising in 2016.
Johnson was on parole for a 2016 kidnapping and rape conviction. Johnson has a lengthy criminal background that includes a stabbing from 2007 and other fights while he was incarcerated.
Investigators believe he shot and murdered Deputy Leising on Saturday during a DUI stop.
Then, approximately an hour later, he is thought to have shot himself.
Funeral plans for Deputy Leising are still being finalized, but we anticipate learning more about them later today.
