As the spring weather slowly warms up, area residents begin thinking about getting ready to ride their bicycles.
John Brunner from The Fitness Store in Manitowoc appeared on the Welcome Home program with guest-host Lindsay Krause Tuesday morning on WOMT and WCUB Radio and spoke about routine bicycle servicing.
Brunner recommended a tune-up every two years.
“I would say on a regular basis if you’re riding your bike a reasonable number of miles per year, I don’t know that it’s necessary to do it every year, although I do have some customers that bring them in every year for that tuneup,” Brunner revealed. “That way they’re ready to ride as soon as the weather turns beautiful.”
In the meantime, John says a very important thing to be mindful of is to keep your tire pressure up and keep the chain oil-lubricated.
Brunner, who has been in the business for 46 years now, said his store continues to sell different styles of bikes, but one stands out in particular.
“The newest thing which we have seen, particularly this year, is an incredible increase in sales in our e-bikes,” he explained. “And the last few years they’ve been okay. This year they’ve just taken off, so e-bikes are the most popular thing we have in our store at the moment.”
Brunner explained that e-bikes may seem counter-productive when it comes to exercise and a healthy lifestyle but he’s discovered these are pedal-assisted bikes, so customers still have to ride the bicycles.
He added, “Really what this (technology) is doing is putting people on bikes that may not otherwise been able to do it.”
