In less than two weeks, Milwaukee’s Fire and Police Commission plans to make body camera footage of upcoming police shootings available.
This week, the FPC is set to vote on a rule requiring the public release of any videos of officer-involved shootings within 15 days.
There is currently no deadline for releasing any body cam footage in the city.
For far over a year, activists have pushed for the tapes to be disclosed as soon as possible.
Despite preferring a 45-day schedule, Milwaukee’s police chief said he would accept the FPC’s decision.
However, suburban police chiefs are opposed to the new approach and claim that premature release of the footage could harm their independent investigations into Milwaukee police shootings.
