Football season may be a few months away yet, but the skill players at the middle school level are getting ready for some 7 on 7 play.
6th and 8th grade wide receivers and defensive backs have been gathering at Ron Rubik Municipal Field for the past two weeks as they get ready to participate in what Lincoln Head Coach Greg Enz calls a concept that has been sweeping the nation.
“Green Bay, or Ashwaubenon specifically has what is called Gridiron Football. It’s a national franchise,” Coach Enz explained. “I thought this would be a great opportunity for our kids to get exposed to some of the concepts that we are trying to use and implement in our offense.”
Coach Enz eluded to It, but the Lincoln Ships Varsity team is implementing a brand new offensive system.
He tells Seehafer News that this system will help boost the Ships’ pass game.
“What this system allows is for us to teach things in a very straightforward way to the kids, and for them to really understand how their individual part is very adaptable to any situation that the defense throws at them,” the Ships Head Coach noted.
Coach Alex Braun, a recent Lincoln grad, is helping coach the middle school players, and he said that they are starting to get the hang of the new system.
“I think they have been doing very well considering that this is new to them and it’s new to us as coaches,” he said. “For being out here just about two weeks, it’s pretty impressive what they picked up in a very short period of time.”
The Gridiron Football season officially kicks off today and will run through early June.
