The Food and Drug Administration recently made a ruling where they determined that milk alternatives such as almond or soy milk to continue using the word milk in their names.
We spoke with Manitowoc County Ag Educator Angie Ulness, who said she was disappointed in the ruling.
“Real milk is the real deal,” she said. “I think a lot of parents don’t realize that it’s very difficult for their kids to get all the nutrition they need for proper growth and development without real dairy in their diet.”
She went on to explain that these alternatives are simply not a good substitute for the real thing, nutritionally speaking.
“A glass of real milk has 13 essential nutrients kids need for growth and development, including 8 grams of high-quality protein,” Ulness explained. “Switching to a milk alternative, it doesn’t have nearly have as much protein, has fewer calories, and doesn’t have nearly as much of the nutrition kids need in their growing bodies.”
Ulness suggested parents speak with their pediatrician before making any big changes in their child’s diets.
