A shipwreck located in Bailey’s Harbor in Door County has received state protections.
The three-masted schooner known as the Emeline was added to the State’s Register of Historic Places.
According to WisconsinShipwrecks.org, the Emeline was built in 1862 in Michigan and spent a majority of its time in service as a lumber carrier.
Her final voyage was on August 8th, 1896, when she was taking a load of tamarack bark from Charlevoix Michigan to Kenosha.
While in the Door County waters about 25 miles southeast of Bailey’s Harbor, she was hit by a sudden, violent gust of wind, causing her to capsize.
The captain and three crew members were able to save themselves by rowing themselves to Bailey’s Harbor.
Now, 127 years later, she sits upright in the sand on the floor of Lake Michigan, much of her components still intact.
