Friday evening, Supreme Court Candidate Justice Dan Kelly made a three-stop tour through Eastern Wisconsin, including a visit to the City of Manitowoc.
While speaking to voters in the Manitowoc Property Management Center, Justice Kelly spoke about why he believes he is the right fit for the open Supreme Court seat.
In an exclusive interview with Seehafer News, Kelly voiced his excitement to see so many voters taking an interest in his race against Judge Janet Protasiewicz.
He noted it was great, “To see so many people who care about the future of the court and the future of the state. They really do continue to treasure the constitution, and the liberties it protects.”
We asked Kelly what he would say to eligible voters who may be on the fence about casting a ballot either in person on April 4th, or absentee.
“I think they should think about what they treasure in their ability to live a free and self-governing society,” he said. “And if it’s important to them to come out and vote.”
During the Jim and Rick Show Friday morning on WOMT Radio, the fact that this race, and many other state and federal races over the years, have been filled with negative ads and mudslinging was brought up.
We asked Kelly why campaigns have gone that way, to which he said, “I don’t know entirely,” before denying slinging any mud during his campaign.
“What we do is what the role of the court is and what a good jurist does, and then we point out aspects of my opponent’s record that are troubling on those grounds,” he explained. “I don’t see that as mudslinging. I think of that as getting the information the people of Wisconsin need to know to make a good decision about who they want on their Supreme Court.”
He also joked that a nice thing about races that feature a lot of negative ads is “You get to wake up every morning and learn something new about yourself that just isn’t true.”
He also spoke briefly about another item on the ballot, an amendment to the cash bail system.
The current system only allows judges to consider what will ensure the defendant will show up to the next court date, regardless of their history.
Kelly explained that “this constitutional amendment changes that so that the courts can consider those factors when considering cash bail.”
We will have the election results next Tuesday evening as they come in. All you have to do is visit SeehaferNews.com and the link will be the first story on the home page.
