A member of the Milwaukee Public Schools board wants to switch to teaching four days a week.
A committee headed by Aisha Carr is looking into how to give teachers and students a day to work on something other than reading, writing, math, or science.
In Carr’s plan, regular lessons would be taught four days a week, and the fifth day would be used for teachers’ professional development, support for mental health, and social-emotional needs.
On that fifth day, students could work outside of school, and teachers would get a break.
Carr claims that “the students and the educators of today” are no longer served by the current five-day week.
She asserts that new ideas are required.
