Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers continued his tour around the state in Manitowoc Thursday as he continues to tout the importance of his proposed Paid Family and Medical Leave Program.
Evers made stops at Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry in Manitowoc and his hometown of Plymouth where he visited the Public Library.
While at WAF, CEO Sachin Shivaram gave the Governor a tour of the plant, and showed him a presentation about what they do, mainly revolving around employee relations.
Evers tells Seehafer News that his leave program is important because it offers families options for paid leave.
“When a child is sick, if you lose child care, obviously it can be used for long-term medical issues too,” he explained. “A lot of states around us are doing it, a lot of companies like right here do it also, so I think it’s something we should consider and have a dialogue about.”
Evers also voiced his support for what WAF is doing for its employees.
“I love the way they operate,” Evers said. “Obviously they have a huge operation here, a very profitable one, and lots of people working here that are earning good money. [They are] caring about their workers by providing lots of opportunities.”
One of those opportunities Evers specifically noted was the hiring of a full-time translator, who is helping the Spanish-speaking residents have a place to work.
The program does have some opposition from the Republican party, but Evers said if they don’t like the amount, “Tell me what amount they like.”
