A free well water nitrate screening will be provided this coming week by the Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department.
To participate, bring ½ cup of well water in a clean bottle to the Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department, located at 4319 Expo Drive, Manitowoc, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. all week.
You can also get your water tested at the I-43 One Stop, which is at 9307 County Road Z in Maribel, or at Rick’s Piggly Wiggly, which is at 80 E. Park Avenue in Kiel, between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.
Our environment naturally contains nitrate, a compound of nitrogen and oxygen, at low concentrations.
Fertilizers, manure, septic systems, and practices for sewage treatment all have the potential to introduce it into groundwater in significantly higher concentrations.
Owners of private wells are strongly encouraged to have their water tested annually.
High levels of nitrate in drinking water can be harmful to your health, especially to infants and women who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.
