The Director of Public Works in Two Rivers spoke this week about his snowplow crews and how they’ve been called upon during the latter days of February.
Matthew Heckenlaible tells Seehafer News they rely heavily on the National Weather Service and area media outlets to plan how to attack weather events so they can “keep the major corridors…and the school, hospital areas open as necessary.”
He went on to say that during the snow event last week, “A lot of entities closed, which kept the traffic down. That helped us in the long run.”
Heckenlaible explained they do have priority routes to plow, but they are modifying them.
He said they will first “hit the state trunk highways, Highway 42, 147, 310, those being the major corridors in an out of the city. Then we will concentrate on those areas with the Manitowoc Metro bus system on it, and then dealing with the areas in and around schools.”
The DPW director said after crews had to deal with about a foot of snow a week ago, they were called out again on Tuesday to clear plugged storm drains.
“With all the rain, then melted the snow that was on the street. The water couldn’t go anywhere, so that created this slop,” he explained. “Monday night the temperatures got below freezing, and it became a frozen mess, which my guys then turned around and plowed off.”
Matthew Heckenlaible says DPW employees are summoned for a citywide plow event anytime the lakeshore city receives over two inches of snow.
