This week, the House Oversight Committee convened for its first hearing investigating the U.S./Mexico Border.
During the hearing, Congressman Grothman questioned John Modlin, Chief Border Patrol Agent of the Tucson, AZ Sector.
The Congressman from Glenbeulah said that from December 2020 to December 2022, the number of illegal immigrants encountered by Border Patrol skyrocketed from 73,995 to 251,487, or by over 200 percent.
In addition to national security concerns, the mass amounts of illegal immigrants flocking to the U.S. represent a humanitarian crisis, which includes large numbers of women and children who are forcibly involved in human trafficking by criminal Cartels.
During the hearing, Grothman said, “Two years ago, in December, there were about 21,000 people who came across the border, both released family units and single adults, as well as gotaways. We have in two years gone from about 21,000 to 238,000 in the most recent December.”
He went on to call the situation a “crisis” and said it is “overwhelming.”
