The Manitowoc County Soil and Water Department is reminding residents to go easy on the salt when tending to their sidewalks and driveways.
Tara Wachowski, the department’s Education and Grants Manager, spoke with Seehafer News this week, where she said that a coffee mug of salt is enough to treat an entire 20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares.
She noted, “Wisconsin Salt Wise partnership and Manitowoc Soil and Water are urging homeowners to make a commitment to reduce salt use this winter because salt can travel into lakes rivers, and streams, putting our freshwater resources at risk.”
It is also hard on vehicles and pets.
Tara also had some tips for reducing your salt usage, including, “Shovel first and clear walkways before snow turns to ice, use just the right amount of salt for safety, then switch to sand for traction or use another ice melter when pavement temps drop below 15 degrees.”
