The former Two Rivers teacher accused of having sex with a student has changed her plea and has been sentenced.
35-year-old Rebecca Kilps pleaded no contest to two charges of having sex with a child over the age of 16, and was sentenced to a total of 6 years on probation, along with 9 months in jail.
However, Judge Robert Dewane gave her two days of credit and had six months of that sentence be stayed, meaning Kilps would not serve that portion of it unless she violated her probation.
Additionally, Judge Dewane deferred judgment on one count of having sex with a child over the age of 16 as school staff.
Again, if Kilps were to violate her probation, she could be sentenced on that charge as well.
Attorney Angelina Scarpelli spoke on behalf of the state and presented an email she received from a teacher.
This teacher noted that he is frustrated that teachers who act the way Kilps did make their jobs harder, as parents look at them in a negative light, despite them doing nothing wrong.
Attorney Jeffery Kippa was representing Kilps and noted all the work she has done in getting counseling, and having her teaching license revoked, despite not being ordered to by the court.
Kilps was also given time to speak, where she apologized to the victim, his family, and the Two Rivers School District, including her coworkers, and asked for their forgiveness.
Judge Dewane spoke to Kilps prior to sentencing and noted that she appeared to have been a great teacher prior to her crimes.
He also said that he feels bad that those students will no longer have a good teacher and the teachers that will be second-guessed.
