During the Manitowoc City Council meeting Monday, the Council got an update on the former Mirro site on Washington Street.
We spoke with Mayor Justin Nickels about that update, and he said that the City has been working with a developer to construct some workforce housing on the property.
“40 to 60 townhomes that would be put on half of the Mirro site, and a lot of it would be of course federally funded and subsidized,” he explained. “There’s a grant process that the developers have to go through with an understanding that there would be some City commitment.”
That is where the City Council comes in.
Mayor Nickels said during the meeting the Council and developer discussed their options.
“We are moving forward, the developer is moving forward in applying for those grants,” Nickels said. “There are a couple of different options of what they can do, so they are going to apply for a couple of them, and hopefully one sticks.”
The mayor also told is if the developer were to receive the applied for tax credits, work could begin on that half of the Mirro property yet this year, but he said, “more optimistically, 2024.”
