Ever since the Cities of Manitowoc and Two Rivers ended their collaboration with the Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau people have been wondering what will happen to the organization’s old building.
We asked Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels if he knows what Illinois developer GMX Real Estate Group Acquisitions LLC is doing there.
The mayor said he has “No clue” while chuckling, but did note that “It looks like they are looking forward with a purchase, which we should see in the first quarter here of 2023.”
He explained that GMX is selling the property to a third-party buyer, who will then develop the land, which is exactly how the Harbor Town area across the street was developed.

“So we don’t know specifically what is going there,” Nickels said. “We can guess, based on what is growing there, what would make sense there.”
The city decided not to use the land for its own Tourism Department because, as Mayor Nickels put it, “We wanted to focus more on downtown and the car ferry…and more so an online presence.”
An exact timeline for when work will begin is not known for certain, but it is estimated that work will begin as early as this summer or fall.
