The Manitowoc Police Department has released its monthly report for December, which includes a look at the number of criminal charges.
The report shows that 157 adult criminal charges were filed in December, which is 39 more than in December in 2021.
The year-to-date number of adult criminal charges was also up, albeit slightly.
Last year, 2,140 charges were filed compared to 2,112 in 2021.
This number has risen consistently over the past three years, with 1,943 reported in 2020.
Police Chief Nick Reimer told us previously that just because the charges are up, that doesn’t necessarily mean that more crimes are being committed.
It could be that more people are being arrested and that his officers are “out there solving crimes.”
Juvenile Criminal charges were also up last year compared to 2021. 223 charges were filed against young people in 2022 compared to 136 in 2021.
However, traffic citations were down 2,519 last year compared to 2,839 in 2021.
