Earlier this week, the Manitowoc Public School District’s Board of Education approved the inclusion of a referendum on the upcoming spring election ballot. .
While on the WCUB Breakfast Club, Superintendent Jim Feil spoke about the referendum, specifically that this would essentially be a continuation of previously passed measures.
“We have been…going out, as most school districts do, for referendums to support operations,” he explained. “Right now we are recognizing high inflations rates, that’s impacting [us].”
He went on to say that this referendum would help the MPSD attract and retain a quality teaching corps and address infrastructure needs.
He noted that Manitowoc has been a “fiscally conservative District” and that “The millage rates that will be going out for our ask will be again one of the lowest in the county, and below the state average. It’s really pretty good in terms of how careful we are in terms of managing and being good fiscal stewards of public money.”
Mill rate is a tax rate some municipalities use to calculate their local property taxes.
The mill rate for the Manitowoc Public School District (which can be seen below) is sitting around $5.50, which is below all school districts in the county with the exception of Reedsville, which is only marginally below Manitowoc’s.
That is also well below where it has been over the past decade, which has been averaging around $7.75 according to a chart released by the District.
