The Manitowoc County Health Department is warning of the dangers of radon.
During an appearance on WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week Manitowoc County Health Officer Stephanie Lambert explained that radon is an odorless, colorless gas that is naturally found in soil.
“It is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers,” she explained. “We lose around 21,000 people every year due to radon.”
She went on to reveal that the only way to know if radon has infiltrated your home is through a test.
On top of being odorless and colorless, Lambert said “It doesn’t cause headaches, it doesn’t cause anything except for lung cancer.”
If you have not had your home tested, Lambert suggests you do so soon.
“The Health Department does sell… long-term and short-term test kits,” she said. “$7 for a short-term, $21 for a long-term test kit. We get those in bulk at a discounted price, and we sell them at cost to consumers.”
She also noted that any home is susceptible to being affected by radon.
To get your radon test kit, you can either stop into the Health Department offices, located at 1028 South 9th Street in Manitowoc or call 920-683-4155 to have one mailed to you.
This option does cost an extra $8.
