Winter weather means slick sidewalks, which means people are using salt to help keep their grip while walking.
While this is a common practice, the City of Manitowoc is warning of the dangers of oversalting in the winter months.
Dan Koski, the Director of Public Infrastructure for the City said in a news release that salt “harms species diversity in our lakes and streams and is even making it to our drinking water.”
To help combat this, the City has started using salt brine, calibrating the salt trucks, and has even used beet juice.
They have also started giving away what they call Salt Wise Cups.
These cups contain the right amount of salt that should be used to treat about 10 Squares of sidewalk for most conditions.
Residents are encouraged to shovel the snow first and to be salt wise when spreading it.
You can get your Salt Wise Cup at City Hall, and you can learn more by visiting WISaltWise.com.
