With only just over a day left in 2022, two local representatives in state government are looking back on what happened over the past year.
District 1 Senator Andre Jacque said he still has a few things left to take care of before next year officially arrives including, “Getting legislation teed up to hopefully get it out there pretty early in the start of the session…so we can get an opportunity to get some things done before we get into the budget discussions and everything else.”
25th District Assemblyman Paul Tittl looked back on what the legislature was able to accomplish, and while cutting taxes was a big part of it, one measure really stands out to him.
“Ethan’s Law basically closed a loophole in state law that actually allowed a 7-year-old boy to be placed in a home that he shouldn’t have been placed into, Ethan Hauschultz,” he explained. “We are grateful, myself and Senator Jacque, we passed that bill to try to prevent anything like that…tragedy from happening.”
Ethan died in 2018 while living with his uncle Timothy Hauschultz in Newton.
Looking forward to 2023, Senator Jacque said that it’s hard to know exactly what is coming, but he and Representative Tittl want to get things going right away.
“We’ve got a number of bills Paul is chomping at the bit to get out there right out of the gate,” he revealed. “Some of them got a good part of the way through the process.”
Tittl said his biggest goal is to work with Governor Tony Evers to “get common sense reforms in all aspects of government.”
“There’s room for us to work together, and I think we should,” he said. “Although he vetoed a lot of bills, I think he signed a lot of common-sense bills as well.”
Tittl and Jacque both told us to keep an eye open next week, as they will be announcing a number of measures they will attempt to get made into law by this time next year.
