The snow is forecast to fall, and the shovels and snowblowers will soon be.
If you have not shoveled the sidewalk in front of your home, the City of Manitowoc is encouraging you to keep up with it.
The Manitowoc Municipal Code requires all property owners, lessees, or occupants of homes to remove the snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of their property.
In a letter sent to residents, the City stated “Any newly fallen snow or newly formed ice on any sidewalk at 6:00 a.m. must be removed by 8:00 p.m. that day.”
Additional notifications will not be given as this is a safety issue.
The first violation of this rule will cost the resident $300, the second will be a total of $676, and the third violation will empty your pocketbook by $865.
That being said, Mayor Justin Nickels told us they are not having police officer patrol neighborhoods looking for offenders.
“It’s usually citizen complaints,” he explained. “A lot of times we find houses that are empty and rentals, that’s where we see a lot of issues.”
