An important safety measure to keep in mind with the approaching snowstorm is to clear the area of snow around fire hydrants in the city.
Manitowoc Fire Chief Todd Blaser issued this plea to area residents this winter.
“It used to be that we had time to go out and help shovel out fire hydrants. That time is long gone with he EMS call volume we have,” he explained. “So if you can help out an elderly neighbor, or if you have a fire hydrant that’s on your block, if you don’t mind trying to work out who is going take care of making sure that is shoveled out, it is greatly appreciated.”
Chief Blaser cited an example from almost 8 years ago about the importance of that practice.
He said, “We had a fine example of a house that had a hydrant right in front of it. The family did a great job of keeping open access and it was right there for us when we needed it.”
The fire chief added, “It can make a great difference.”
