Ever since it was announced, teachers and parents have been critical of the new literacy program being instituted in the Manitowoc Public School District.
The program is known as Success for All, and District leadership chose it to help improve students’ reading ability.
The state report card indicated that only 29% of students in Manitowoc are reading at grade level.
To show that the program is successful, principals and teachers in the district took a trip to Steubenville, Ohio to see the program in action.
Their reading proficiency level is reported to be near 100%. The educators say that they were impressed with the program, which focuses more on students working together as opposed to teacher instruction.
Superintendent Jim Feil has told us that reading is the foundation of education.
He explained that students learn to read through grade three, and read to learn after that.
