The Hobart-Lawrence Police Department has released some additional details regarding the Wednesday incident where an officer accidentally shot himself.
We already knew the incident occurred on Highway 29 near County Road FF during a standoff with a fleeing suspect, but now we know the officer is in stable condition.
While the Department is continuing to investigate the situation, Hobart-Lawrence Police Captain Michael A. Renkas noted in a news conference yesterday that his officers carry Sig Sauer handguns.
This is notable because several wounded officers across the country are in the middle of a lawsuit with the company.
The weapons have allegedly gone off without an officer pulling the trigger over 100 times since February 2020.
Renkas did say that saying outright that a weapon malfunction is the cause would be “premature”.
