Olive Fischer, age 93, a resident of Manitowoc, entered eternal life while surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center.
Olive was born on April 9, 1929 in the Town of Franklin to the late Adolph and Barbara (Chizek) Shimon. In 1952, Olive married James R. Fischer. He preceded her in death in 1994. The Fischer household was sometimes a veritable zoo of animals over the years, from dogs to canaries to batches of baby bunnies. Olive especially loved horses since childhood – Sam, the draft horse, was her favorite – and her family would stock her house with horse artwork and calendars every year. Olive was an amazing caregiver to her five grandchildren. She would build blanket forts in the backyard, make mud rivers in the sandbox, and pull kids in the little red wagon down to the corner bakery for sugar cookies. Holidays were always magical as the house was warm and overflowing with food and her signature Christmas cookies. Olive loved walking around Citizen Park and tending to her garden and flowers. If chipmunks were found to be disrupting her plots, she humanely trapped and released them across the river. Olive was also an adept Sheepshead cardplayer. She refrained from table talk, but could slyly bury points, schmear, and make leasters with the best of them. At the end of the night after the old fashioned drinks had been sipped dry, Olive usually had the biggest pile of silver dimes and nickels hidden under her coin purse. She loved listening to Brewers games on her vintage radio, but supported the Cubs 2016 World Series win staying up way past her bedtime. Olive enjoyed watching football, and was a supporter of the Green Bay Packers. The world is a better place because of Olive’s love for her family and friends.
Survivors include Olive’s three children, Judy (Jerry) Heaps, Dan (Patrice) Fischer, and Doug (Jennifer) Fischer; five grandchildren, Jill (Adam) Stepanek, Bernie Fraser III, Tony Fischer, Gina Fischer, and Spencer Fischer; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Olive was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Barbra Shimon; husband, James; son, John; and five brothers, John (first widowed by Evelyn, later Celia) Shimon, Adolph (Irene) Shimon, Joe (Martha) Shimon, Bennie (Grace) Shimon, and Melvin (Delores) Shimon.
