This time of year is known as the time of giving, and the United Way of Manitowoc County did just that last week.
According to Ashley Bender, the Executive Director of the United Way, roughly 50 volunteers showed up to help serve an estimated 250 people a Thanksgiving Day meal.
“A majority of those were to go, but we had right around maybe 40-45 people dine in as well,” she explained. “This was out at Roncalli (High School) in their atrium.”
Seeing as it was Thanksgiving, Bender gave thanks to all of the volunteers and local businesses that helped make the service possible.
“We received some vegetables from Lakeside Foods, and Meijer stepped up in a big way and gave us right around $300 worth of food,” she said. “We also received some in-kind donations, dairy products from Pine River Dairy. And then some of the other items we did get through the area pantries, Grow it Forward and the Salvation Army in particular.”
As of now, no community meal has been planned for around Christmas, but Bender told us that they are discussing it, and it may become a reality as we get ever closer to December 25th.
