It was a successful opening weekend for Wisconsin’s nine-day gun deer season.
The state Department of Natural Resources reported a total of 102,347 deer were registered statewide during the opening weekend, a 15% increase over 2021 and on par with the average opening weekend harvest. A total of 55,503 bucks were registered, a 14% increase over 2021 and 2% above the 5-year average.
Jeff Pritzl, Deer Program Specialist with the DNR, said about half the firearm harvest happens during the opening weekend, and the other half will happen in the remaining seven days of that nine-day season.
