Manitowoc’s Peter’s Pantry has been serving county residents in need for over 36 years now. For most of those 3-plus decades, the food pantry has operated out of a former small grocery distribution center at South 21st and Franklin Streets. As Director Woody Shulander says, they “started with very humble beginnings.” Back in those days, it started in people’s garages helping other families. Then it went into the church basement and expanded all along the way.
Shulander explained they kept the doors open during the 2 covid years and the pandemic caused a real decline, even though those in need could come in and choose what they wanted. Now, he says, “they’re back in full swing.” So people are coming in and choosing the types of food that they can use for their own homes. Make choices on their own, we’re doing a lot of families per day and we’re open four days a week so that they can come in.
With inflation and higher energy prices taking hold, he’s seeing new families seeking help at the pantry. There’s no doubt it’s a big help to individuals. (Because) You run into hardship somewhere down the line. I mean it’s not necessary you come in every week, but maybe some people come in once every month it helps them out. Whatever works for them.
Shulander added, there are “heartwarming stories and he cites one example.” Just the other day I had an individual come in and handed me a check for a donation. I said well as long as we have your address, I want to send you a thank you note. Oh, she said you don’t have to do that. We used your pantry for so many years to get our feet underneath us, but now we’re doing fine and we want to pay you back for what you did. You know that really makes you feel good.
To qualify or register to receive food at Peter’s Pantry, Shulander explains people should bring in a photo ID of themselves and a utility bill or rental agreement to show residency in Manitowoc County. He emphasized donations and volunteers are always needed and those interested in assisting can call 920-682-6989.
