Following the passage of a new law in Wisconsin, motorists could see green lights added to county and municipal highway snowplows this winter.
Manitowoc County Highway Commissioner Greg Grotegut spoke about the change during an interview with Seehafer News.
“It is strictly for highway maintenance crews,” he explained. “You’ll see a couple of the newest trucks with some of the green lights. Not every one will have them right away, but that is one thing you’ll see new this year with highway department trucks.”
State officials say studies have shown that green lights cut through snow better than white and amber lights.
Regarding motorists when they approach a snowplow this winter and what the law says, Grotegut says, “Stay back 250 feet, you know try not to pass them. Obviously, on the interstate you can pass, but always be mindful (of their presence).”
The local highway commissioner says they have a couple of patrolmen who monitor the pavement temperatures on major highways, along with constantly watching the latest weather forecasts in the event of major snow or ice developments.
