With snow showers in the forecast on a regular basis this week, the Manitowoc County Highway Department is ready to keep the roads safe for motorists.
County Highway Commissioner Greg Grotegut tells Seehafer News that he had “several guys” on the roads yesterday preparing for the snow we are receiving today.
They were brining the roads and preparing their salt trucks.
Grotegut explains the makeup of the liquid concoction applied to roadways.
“Salt and water. Nothing different from that,” he said. “Salt mixed in with water, about pounds per gallon.”
The highway commissioner was asked about the amount of salt on hand at their shop.
“Right now we have about 4,000 tons of county salt on hand. We have another 4,000 tons basically on seasonal if we need it,” he revealed. “We are in good shape. Hopefully, we don’t have to use much.”
When asked if he expects a snowy winter, Grotegut said simply, “Every year is different. Can’t do anything about it until it’s on the ground.”
Grotegut advises motorists to take their time until they have some brine or a full round of salt on the roads, or enough snow to warrant salting everything, they’re going to get slippery fast.
