This time of year used to be known as the flu season, but now, medical professionals are encouraging people to get the updated COVID-19 booster vaccines.
Much like flu vaccines, the virus continues to evolve as mankind continues its battle, which is why Dr. Ada Stewart of Cooperative Health in Columbia, South Carolina says getting these boosters is very important.
“The interesting thing about COVID-19 is the virus that causes it has really evolved over the past year or so,” she explained while on the WCUB Breakfast Club this week.
She also revealed that the monovalent vaccine was working well against the initial coronavirus and several of the variants, but is no longer as effective.
“This bivalent, which is the updated vaccine, it’s really important that we all get that to be protected, especially as we go into the holiday season,” the doctor said.
Everyone 5 years old or older is now eligible to receive a COVID vaccine.
