Manitowoc’s Forestry Division is continuing to have an issue with the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle.
This year alone, hundreds of trees had to be removed due to their infection, but the beetle was first located in the city in 2017.
The Emerald Ash Borer attacks ash trees, causing them to die within five years of being infected.
The DNR estimates that a previously healthy forest could be decimated within six years of the beetle being introduced if no action is taken.
Homeowners are being asked to treat their trees with insecticides every year to help curb this dangerous trend.
If there is any positive to take out of the situation it would be that the City is able to recoup some of the cost of downing the infected trees by selling the wood as firewood.
