The man accused of starting a fatal bar fire in Sturgeon Bay was supposed to go on trial this month, but there has been a delay.
58-year-old Anthony Gonzalez is facing two counts of 2nd Degree Reckless Homicide and five counts of 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety after he allegedly started Butch’s Bar on fire back in February.
His defense team asked the court for additional time to prepare for trial, which was granted.
His trial will now begin on May 22nd.
Gonzalez reportedly told first responders that he had spilled butane on his bed while filling a lighter in his apartment above the bar, which then started on fire when he lit a cigarette.
Two people died in the fire, and many others narrowly escaped.
He has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $250,000 cash bond.
