Scams involving Wisconsin Public Service are typically on the increase during the winter months and WPS customers have lost thousands of dollars to scammers over the years.
Crime Prevention Sergeant Paul Krock of the Manitowoc Police Department issued a statement saying “Some red flags power customers should watch for is if the scammer threatens to immediately turn off a customer’s energy.”
Also, he says, “WPS will never demand immediate payment by pre-paid debit or gift cards, in bitcoin or through third-party apps such as Venmo or Cash App.”
Sergeant Krock advises that if a resident suspects they have received a fraudulent phone call, it is recommended that they hang up and call Wisconsin Public Service directly at 1-800-450-7260.
