Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu
The State Senator representing southern Manitowoc County, including the city of Manitowoc, appeared on WOMT’s Be My Guest this week.
9th district Republican and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu was asked by host Lee Douglas to name his priorities for the next legislative session in January.
LeMahieu explained What he can accomplish depends on who the governor is.
“If Evers wins again, it’ll be a lot of the status quo of what we’re doing now,” he said. “We’ll work on legislation that we think is important, send it to him and he’ll probably veto a lot of that. But, the most important thing we’ll do then is in the budget process and hope he signs it again like he did last time. So, going into this next budget we currently have a $5.5 billion dollar projected surplus.”
LeMahieu says the projected surplus is higher because you’ve been paying more for sales and income taxes because wages are higher due to inflation.
“The most important thing then we can do is reduce taxes but also invest in local government that is probably facing the same inflationary pressures that we are as a state,” he said. “You know make sure we’re investing in corrections and health, things like that. The cost of roads is only going up because the cost of everything going into roads is going up.”
The area legislative leader told us the other concern factored in is that we “seem to be entering a recession in the country and what are revenues going to look like in the future.”
The Oostburg native is not up for reelection this time around but has been traveling the state to help republican candidates be successful in their races next Tuesday.
