A Manitowoc native and 1988 Roncalli High School grad has developed 5 or 6 patents for devices that he uses in performing hip and knee surgery.
Dr. Robert Limoni is with Holy Family Memorial Lakeshore Orthopaedics and was on WOMT’s Be My Guest earlier this year.
Saying his passion has been hip and knee replacement since 2001, Dr. Limoni pointed out there’s an impression out there that sometimes you have to go to Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, or Appleton to receive high-level care.
“We’re bringin’ it right here in Manitowoc,” he said. “We’re doing clinical first in the nation. We did the first Augmented Reality knee and hip surgery that the FDA approved in the United States this year. So, we don’t have to leave town to get high-level care and the highest technology available for patients.”
Dr. Limoni quoted a striking statistic pointing out the increased demand for such replacement surgeries in the near future.
He explained that “In the United States there’s going to be a 300% increased demand for this surgery in the next ten years, so we’re coming to a crossing point where we have to step our game up to meet the needs.”
The local surgeon said, “Traditionally, this was a surgery for elderly people, but as technology and materials have improved we’re seeing a trend of doing hip and knee replacement surgery at a younger age. And those implants are lasting 20-to-30 years which is awesome for those mechanical parts. People are ultimately living longer because of it.”
