Governor Tony Evers made a campaign stop at the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc today.
During his stop, Attorney General Josh Kaul, and Evers’ running mate Sara Rodriguez all spoke about what they look to achieve if reelected into office.
One of the aspects Governor Evers mentioned was more funding for education.
He mentioned that the Milwaukee Public School District makes $16,000 per student, and as we learned earlier this week in our Manitowoc Public School District deep dive series, the MPSD only makes $14,000 per student, which is the least in the County.
We asked the Governor how his proposal would address that.
He did not have exact numbers but did say, “It would increase that money for sure. There is no question about that. We are going to be providing hundreds of millions of dollars for special needs kids, and $250 million for kids with mental health issues.”
We were also able to speak with his running mate, Sara Rodriguez, who said she was very happy to be joining the Governor on the campaign trail.
“I just think we need to have a strong partnership within the state government,” she explained. “I am somebody who has worked in a variety of different roles and in fact have been an executive leading in the healthcare system, so I believed I could be a really good partner to Governor Evers in something as large and complicated as the Wisconsin state government.”
Governor Evers also mentioned he is looking to continue his goal to “fix the damn roads” and referred to the fact that he ran on fixing “Scott Holes” in the 2018 election.
We had to ask about Washington Street, and if it was being bumped up the list.
“Hopefully the answer is yes. A lot of people have needs too, but Washington Street is in need,” he replied.
Evers and Rodriguez will be challenged on November 8th by Republican Tim Michels and his running mate Roger Roth, while Kaul is facing Eric Toney.
