Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig
Statistics show Manitowoc County is the 4th largest dairy-producing county in Wisconsin, so we have a very large farm population.
During a recent appearance on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, Sheriff Dan Hartwig had some safety reminders to drivers during the Fall harvest season.
“We are going to see an increased amount of John Deers, International Harvesters, and a bunch of different instruments of husbandry traveling on the roadway,” he said. “Usually this time of year too, we get our complaints of mud on the roadway. We always greatly appreciate our farmers out there getting stuff cleaned up as soon as possible.”
The sheriff told us another question he often gets this time of year concerns slow-moving farm equipment on a double-lined stretch of highway, can they pass or not pass them?
“It’s just like any other motor vehicle that’s slow-moving out there, do not pass that equipment,” Hartwig explained. “It’s a double line for a reason…They don’t want you passing for a potential head-on collision.”
Hartwig also cautioned with the angle of the sun early in the day and late in the afternoon, the sun can be blinding and that contributed to a fatal crash in southern Manitowoc County, and another a day or two later in neighboring Calumet County.
