Washington County continues to press for a ten-percent tax increase to hire more deputies.
There was a listening session last night in Hartford to sell voters on the idea.
County leaders want to raise just over $3.5 million a year to hire more deputies. Sheriff Martin Schulteis says Washington County has seen its population grow in recent years, he wants the sheriff’s office to keep up.
The sheriff wants to hire 30 new people, not all of them would be deputies, some would work in the jail and others would be part of a mental health response team.
There are four more listening sessions scheduled before Election Day.
