Manitowoc Lincoln finished 5th and 7th respectively in the boys and girls divisions at Friday’s Fond du lac Memorial Cross Country Meet.
Lincoln senior Mason Gates placed 2nd overall in the boys’ run with Germantown capturing the team title.
Coach Michael Bubolz told us the Ships girls wound up 7th as a team with Mequon Homestead taking the crown.
Freshman Sarah Bolchen topped local runners with a 9th-place performance.
For those curious about the term “harriers” used in the title, it stems from a practice in the early 19th century.
According to the Encyclopedia Brittanica, a form of cross country known as paper chasing, or hare and hounds was held around that time.
The entry states, “the ‘hares’ started a few minutes before the others and left a trail of paper scraps to be followed by the ‘hounds.’ Cross-country runners came to be known as harriers, after a small hound used to chase genuine hares.”
