Inflation has had a negative effect on everyone, especially the homeless in our community.
Michael Etheridge, Executive Director of The Haven Men’s Homeless Shelter, tells us the lack of affordable housing has been an issue.
“Now more than ever before, it’s even more enhanced due to inflation,” he said. “We have had some unfortunate circumstances with men being screened out because of their circumstances and situations.”
Etheridge cited an example, saying “Guy saves $2,800, is looking for a place, finds a place, puts a security deposit down, first months rent, and all of a sudden it’s mailed back to him saying we went with someone else. No explanation or anything.”
He added, “This has sent a few of our men into a deep depression because they work so hard but, because of their background they’re not the perfect renter for the apartment.”
