Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels
Small businesses in Manitowoc are struggling.
While this is an issue facing many small businesses around the country, locally, there have been several small businesses that have closed their doors.
The Galley recently announced that they were shutting down after over 40 years, and not long before that Lakeshore Sub and Pizza Shop announced they were closing as well.
There are rumors of several other restaurants on the brink of closure.
We asked Mayor Justin Nickels why this trend is happening.
“Pretty much every business is looking to hire people. That just seems to be the standard all around,” he told Seehafer News. “I do weekly business visits…and each and every one of them could hire this many, that many people today.”
While Mayor Nickels said there isn’t a whole lot the city can do about that issue, he said they are doing their best to make Manitowoc a “community where people want to live…Quality of life is huge, so that’s one focus of the city.”
Nickels went on to say, “We are starting programs for small businesses, loans or grants for ones that are wanting to start, and maybe just need to get over that hump, and large ones, just like we helped try to get AMMO here.”
The mayor also said, “While we can’t necessarily just snap our fingers and get a bunch of people here to work, we are still trying our best.”
