white-tailed deer in fall field in rutt
With bow hunters back in the woods, the Manitowoc Police Department is reminding motorists that this is the time of year when the most car/deer crashes occur.
The Department warns that deer are more active during dawn and dusk, so drivers should be extra alert at those times.
While deer crossing signs aren’t telling the deer where to cross the roads, they do mark where they are most likely to cross.
If you are about to hit a deer, try to keep calm and do NOT swerve to avoid the animal.
The local police department suggests you hit the brakes but stay in your lane.
Your attention will likely only be on the deer, so you may not see an oncoming vehicle or one next to you.
Hitting an oncoming car is much more dangerous not only for you but also for those in the other vehicle.
And finally, deer travel in groups, so if you see one, it is likely that more are nearby.
