As news reporters, it is our job to take the legalese used in governmental meetings and explain it in Lehman’s terms.
While going through the recent Manitowoc City Council meeting minutes, a term caught our eye, quit claim deed.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickles told us that basically, it’s giving someone the deed to the land while the initial owner retains legal possession.
He said essentially, “We are deeding you this area so you can put the road over, the utilities under ort whatever…but if ever we need to remove it we have the right to.”
The reason that term came up in the Council meeting is because one was needed for the FedEx Distribution plant project on Viebahn Street.
Nickles explained that the project requires a lot of public improvements, including “doing a public road to Dewey Street. That’s going to be their main entrance.”
FedEx recently announced some cutbacks after its stock fell 16%.
When asked if this is going to affect their project here, Mayor Nickels said, “Not that I’m aware of.”
This $32.6 million project is going in at the corner of Viebahn and South 42 Streets.
A completion date has not yet been announced.
