The City of Green Bay will soon be installing twelve more license plate reader cameras.
The City Council approved the $332,000 purchase at their recent meeting, however, it wasn’t quite as many as the Police Department was asking for.
Chief Christopher Davis had submitted a request for 28 to 40 cameras.
Even without the additional 16 to 28 cameras, the Chief has stated that the program has been very successful so far in its infancy.
In fact, the cameras were able to help locate and capture Alejandro Cantu, who is believed to be involved in a homicide, and identified several stolen vehicles over the weekend.
Chief Davis also clarified that these cameras are not intended to be used for traffic enforcement.
Using such cameras for traffic enforcement is actually illegal in Wisconsin, so these are only used to find stolen vehicles, or those registered to someone believed to be involved in a crime.
