The school year may only be just over a week old, but Manitowoc Lincoln Principal Lee Thennes says he is rather impressed with student behavior.
Students started class on August 30th, after two years which Thennes referred to as “disjointed and not great”.
He said the students and staff are off to a great start with more focus and energy.
In fact, he met with the incoming freshman class last week, and he said not only were they all quiet, but they all paid attention.
“I challenged them to be a part of making our learning community a better place for not themselves, but also for other kids. They are off to a good start,” Thennes said. “Our freshman class also has relatively high participation rates in sports and activities which is a great thing. They really rebounded.”
We asked Thennes if the newly revamped Code of Conduct has played a part in this great start to the year.
He said that clearly defined expectations are essential and that “What this Code has done is it allowed us a platform to say to our students, families, and staff, ‘Lincoln High School has expectations for everyone to follow. We are young adults here. We need to learn how to be responsible in our school setting and our community setting.’”
Thennes said that the job of the teachers and staff at the school is to “help make you more effective communicators, more creative problem solvers, and more engaged community members.”
The Manitowoc Public School District isn’t done with the Code just yet though.
The Ad-Hoc Student Behavior Advisory Committee is scheduled to gather at 4:15 this evening to look over feedback on the changes they made.
