Manitowoc Lincoln High School runner Mason Gates had a record-breaking day Saturday when the Ships competed at the Shawano Hawk Cross Country Invitational.
According to Lincoln Coach Michael Bubolz, Gates shattered the 5,000-meter school record with a blazing time of 15:28, which eclipsed the previous mark of 15:46 set by Bill Knier in 1981.
According to Coach Bubolz, Mason has the 2nd fastest time in any division in Wisconsin and the only runner better so far is a Kaukauna athlete who edged him by one-tenth of a second in Saturday’s race.
The Ships boys placed 5th out of 24 teams at the meet won by Notre Dame Academy.
Caleb Jatczak also medaled as the 8th fastest D1 athlete at Shawano.
Kaukauna won the girls’ team title with Lincoln finishing 10th out of 21 schools.
Sarah Bolchen again led the Ships, running a season-best 20:31 to place 6th in the large school varsity race.
The Ships travel to Illinois this week to compete at the Bill Dawson Invitational in Gurnee.
