A trial was supposed to begin next week for the murder of Jason Mendez-Ramos in Green Bay nearly a year ago, but new evidence has been submitted so the trial has been postponed.
A criminal complaint indicates that Pedro Santiago-Marquez, killed Mendez-Ramos because he owed him $80,000 for cocaine.
Jeisaac Rodriguez-Garcia and Alexander Burgos-Mojica are accused of assisting in the burning of Mendez-Ramos’ body at the UW Green Bay Campus.
The defense stated earlier this week that they plan on pointing to another man for being responsible for the killing, while the prosecution has introduced voicemails from a key witness into evidence.
Both sides will take some time to review the evidence, so the new trial date has been set for February 27th.
The prosecutors also changed the charge against Santiago-Marquez to 1st Degree Intentional Homicide as Party to the Crime earlier this week, which means they now only have to prove that he aided and abetted in the action of Mendez-Ramos’ killing.
