Bernice in Sputnikfest Garb
The Cedar Crest Ice Cream Manufacturing Plant and Parlor is fully-invested in this weekend’s Manitowoc Sputnikfest celebration.
Ken Kohlwey, President of Cedar Crest, tells Seehafer News that Bernice, the big cow, has a “very imposing figure and generates the awe of onlookers year-round. But, when she is dressed as a space alien, I guess you could say Bernice is out-of-this-world.”
Kohlwey explained that the Rahr West Art Museum actually owns her outfit, so Greg Vadney and his staff come to the plant and ice cream parlor every year to dress Bernice and make sure “the costume still fits her.”
To observe Manitowoc’s place in space history, recorded back on September 5th, 1962, the Cedar Crest president said they are serving a special flavor at their ice cream parlor called Deep Space.
It’s a combination of Blue Moon and Dark Chocolate ice cream, blended with dark chocolate pieces and swirled with white frosting.
The Blue Moon signifies the blue sky before reaching outer space.

Dark Chocolate represents the darkness of deep space, the dark chocolate pieces signify the space debris floating around the universe and the White Frosting represents a galaxy in space.
Kohlwey also pointed out that The Masquers will be featuring Deep Space Ice Cream along with Root Beer Floats at their Floatation Station during Sputnikfest outside the Rahr West, Saturday.
